At Yarrabilba State Secondary College, our Junior Secondary curriculum is designed to build strong foundations in essential knowledge and skills while preparing students for the future.
From 2026, students in Years 7–9 will engage in dedicated subject areas of English, Mathematics, Science, and Humanities (moving from an integrated model). This structure ensures students develop deep understanding and confidence in each discipline, aligned with the v9 of the Australian Curriculum.
While subjects are delivered as distinct learning areas, our approach to teaching remains highly engaging and purposeful.
We continue to prioritise:
- Hands-on learning experiences
- Real-world, project-based learning
- Entrepreneurial thinking and innovation
- Explicit teaching of literacy and numeracy across all subjects>/li>
This balanced approach ensures students are both academically prepared and equipped with transferable skills for future pathways.
Our Approach to Teaching and Learning
At Yarrabilba State Secondary College, we believe students learn best when learning is meaningful, connected to real-life, and hands-on.
Our classrooms emphasise:
- Practical, hands-on learning
- 21st century skills
- Inquiry and problem-solving
- Collaboration and teamwork
- Real-world application of knowledge
- Entrepreneurial thinking
- Flexible and inclusive learning environments
Students are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and take ownership of their learning. These approaches support the development of confident, capable learners who are well prepared for senior schooling and life beyond the classroom.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
At Yarrabilba State Secondary College, we are committed to ensuring that every student can access learning and demonstrate success.
We use the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to design inclusive learning experiences that reduce barriers and provide flexibility for all learners.
This means we:
- Provide multiple ways to engage students in their learning by offering choice, building relevance, and fostering a supportive classroom environment
- Present learning in different ways (visual, verbal, written, and digital) to support understanding
- Offer flexible ways for students to demonstrate their learning, allowing them to show what they know through a range of formats such as written responses, presentations, projects, or multimedia.
Through this approach, students are not limited to a single way of learning or being assessed.
Instead, they are supported to:
- Build confidence in their abilities
- Develop independence and ownership of their learning
- Demonstrate their knowledge and skills in ways that align with their strengths
Our commitment to UDL ensures that all students—regardless of their background, abilities, or learning needs—are supported to succeed.
